21 Mar Making Your Own Rules: A Few Thoughts From Our President, Jeff Russell
Here is the question for today: what if who you’ve become isn’t who you really are?
Let that sink in for a minute.
From a young age, we are told who we are, what we’re good at, what we suck at, what we can afford, what we can’t afford, etc. The list goes on and on.
There are a lot of “shoulds” in there too. You should be a {enter profession here} when you grow up. You should stop wasting your time {enter any activity here}. Stop “should-ing” on yourself, and stop “should-ing” on others.
These are Brules, which I have talked about before. Brules, aka BS rules. We all live by them (even if we don’t realize it). They are what we think society thinks we should do, what our parents think we should do, what our spouse thinks we should do, and so on.
What’s missing is what we think we should do! Is your life right now the life you want? Are you spending your free time doing what you love?
This week, spend some time thinking about this idea. Is who you’ve become who you want to be? If so, sweet!
If not, think of all the Brules you are living – ones that have been told to you by your parents, friends, and relatives – include everyone! Then, write the Brules down on a piece of paper and burn them (throwing them away works too), and write down your new rules.
I guarantee this is life-changing.
Life is good. – Jeff
